Comic Aside

Hello,

Here are two images I worked up a while ago, playing in ZBrush, 3DSMAx and Vray. I wanted to see what Superheroes in their classic costumes looked like in the real world. I have to admit that their classic costumes look garish and silly when rendered as real - and yet, somehow, I much prefer them to the post-Matrix, black leather you always see in films nowadays.

First up is Magneto, who was an obvious choice - I remember buying the anniversary reprint of the first issue of X-Men and found his choice of clothing totally bizarre. Such bright colours for such a dark, complicated character.

Next, Green Lantern who, I have to admit, I didn't know too much about about until several years ago - I always found superhero comics to be a bit dull, issue-led and earthbound. But the Green Lantern Corp had adventures beyond space and would tackle crazy ideas, with funky aliens. That was more my thing, what with being a kid obsessed with Star Wars, Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica and Blake's 7.

I'm fascinated by the Green Lantern Corp, their uniforms and quasi-military organisation, it's something I'd never really counted on seeing in American comics. Consider me a convert!

Horus Heresy: Fulgrim

This was the first time I'd been asked to illustrate any of the Primarchs and I was very nervous about doing so. As a fan I'd always wanted to see the Primarchs in all their glory. The only thing was they had to be far away in the background, having a fight.

On Ferrus Manus' back I wanted a big old-fashioned diesel engine to suggest his mechanical nature. It was great fun to do and also have a chance to add a dreadnought and some vehicles in there.

Trivia: Some have suggested Ferrus Manus' backpack looks like a beer barrel, I guess that means he'll never get thirsty.

SS Indomitable

Here's a quick sketch of a spaceship idea I had where I wanted to pay tribute to some of my favourite spaceships (everyone has a favourite spaceship, right?).

I wanted to get a bit of the Medical Frigate fro SW:TESB, the Yamato-II, The Enterprise from ST:TMP and I've always liked how Enemy Mine, the Jetsons and artists like John C Berkey treated space - it wasn't just a solid black, it had colour, tone and looked interesting.

This was a quick sketch, about an hour.

Doctor Who?

In light of the announcement of the new Doctor Who, Matt Smith, I'm going to share a little piece I recently completed.

Here's a render of a Zbrush sculpt of the 10th Doctor Who, David Tennant. Another likeness test, this was a test to model hair in a more sculptural way. A fun little exercise and a good way to keep my 3D skills sharp. Maybe BBC Licensing would like me to work on Limited Edition bust sculpts ;)

Trivia: Whilst sculpting this likeness I became so involved in getting it right, I would find myself doodling David Tennants' likeness without even realising it!

It's 2009
